Digipak Album Cover

Using Adobe Photoshop, I produced an Album cover for the Digipak. The purpose of the digipak is to promote the music through an album cover design. This is the final draft of the album covers we will be using from what we've produced previously.
Album Cover - Front

Album Cover - Back (Tracklisting)

I have produced a prezi which presents the evaluation of our final digipak album cover design. I have evaluated both album covers (front and back) with analysis of some of the features and characteristics such as choice of colour, graphics and font. Ideas for the design of this digipak cover came from other digipaks from the moodboard in one of my previous posts but also from our own ideas. The prezi can be viewed below:

Analysis of Digipak Covers

As part of my research into Digipaks and their designs, I conducted different types of analysis from Andrew Goodwin's view. Andrew Goodwin came up with six different techniques used in music videos and they are as follows:

  1. Voyeurism
  2. Intertextuality
  3. Star Image
  4. Relationship Between Music and Visuals
  5. Relationship Between Lyrics and Visuals
  6. Genre Characteristics

The first Digipak cover I analysed was K Koke's 'Pure Koke Volume 2' and the analysis has been presented on Prezi which can be viewed below.

Biography of Artist

Name of Artist: Ace Copeland

Date Of Birth: 14/01/1987

Origin: Hounslow, West London, England

Genre(s): Indie, Hip Hop, Rap

Occupation: Rapper, Singer

Label: Ice Cold Entertainment

We decided to use the name Ace Copeland as we felt that this name portrayed someone who had their own unique style, someone who sets trends and the name itself is unique. Our track is of the Rap/Indie genre and we had to choose a name that wasn't too much of a rap artist name but also wasn't too much of an indie artist name. After a going through a list of names, we felt that this name was perfect for our artist.

The age of our artist is 25, we felt this as most artists in the genre are of this age and the general appearance of out character makes him look slightly older than he actually is. Therefore we decided to choose an age that is similar to that of other artists in this genre and also an age that suited our character.

Explanation of Decisions

We decided to use the name Ace Copeland as we felt that this name portrayed someone who had their own unique style, someone who sets trends and the name itself is unique. He is a indie/rap artist and indie artists normally don't show much of themselves, Ace is related to the game poker as people don't really show their real faces to win the game.

Research on Record Labels

As part of my research into the music videos, I have conducted research into Record Labels and their input in music videos. For my research, I have decided to research into the Record Label 'Aftermath Records'.

First and foremost, the function of a Record Label such as Aftermath Music is to sign artists with potential and to develop the artists so that they produce music that accumulates a large target audience. The music is then distributed by either themselves, their parent companies or seperate distribution companies. Record Labels will have good links within the industry to studios, producers, songwriters, directors and production companies. They will also contribute towards the production of the music and music videos through providing finance to artists to which they will use to complete albums and other promotional materials such as music videos.

Record Labels use music videos as a marketing strategy to promote both the music and the artist, to show off any other talent that the artist may have such as dancing and acting and finally to represent the record label themselves through the talent of the artist.

For the purpose of my research, I will be using Aftermath's '50 Cent' as an example of how Aftermath promoted its artist 50 Cent through the use of music videos. Below I have uploaded a video of 50 Cent's single 'In Da Club' from the album 'Get Rich Or Die Tryin'.

Aftermath contributed towards the production of this video in order to promote 50 Cent's Album 'Get Rich Or Die Tryin' as well as to promote other ventures such as Aftermath itself and 'G-Unit Records'. This can be seen as artists 'Eminem' and 'Dr Dre' are present throughout the video wearing white coats, this is to portray themselves as doctors and at the start of the video there were credits stating that the location of the video was at 'Shady/Aftermath Artist Development Center'. The synopsis of this video is about artists Dr Dre and Eminem  developing the recording artist 50 Cent and this is done through recording the music video. Therefore, the plot of this video portrays the purpose of music videos in general which is promoting music through recording and releasing a music video of the song itself.

Video sites such as 'Youtube' allow record labels, artists and production companies as well as individuals to upload their videos to the site. This allows the video to become publicly viewable to the rest of the world which in turn promotes the video and the artist even further.

Digipak - Drafts

In order to promote our music video, we were assigned to complete a 'Digipak'. The Digipak consists of 4 Panels of artwork. Using Adobe Photoshop, I have produced the first draft of our Digipak.

First Draft of Digipak

This is the first draft of our CD cover, we felt that this CD cover was too basic and had no relation to our artist at all. Therefore we decided not to continue with this album cover and are currently in the process of producing another one which will be uploaded soon.

Cast

This is the cast of our music video, there are three characters, two of which who appear as cameos and the last character who is the main character appearing throughout the whole music video.

Hamzah Jam (Ace Copeland - Artist)

Hamzah Jam - The Main Artist

This is our main character, we felt that Hamzah was perfect to be our artist as in our research we felt that he best matched the description of the artist that they imagined when listening to the music track. His sense of fashion matched that of the feedback we received when we asked our focus group 'What do you imagine when you listen to this track?'

Hamzah will be appearing throughout the whole video lipsyncing the lyrics and walking through the different locations.

Homayon Wardak (Mad Wood - Cameo Appearance)

Homayon Wardak - Cameo
This character is the first cameo who appears in a number of scenes alongside myself. There will be appearances throughout certain intervals of the video, these appearances will occur when the artist starts imagining things in his head and the things this artist imagines will be acted out by myself and Homayon. Therefore myself and Homayon are figures of the artist's imagination.

Maheshvar Ladwa (Ice Rhymes - Cameo Appearance)

Maheshvar Ladwa - Cameo
This character is the second cameo who appears in a number of scenes alongside Homayon. There will be appearances throughout certain intervals of the video, these appearances will occur when the artist starts imagining things in his head and the things this artist imagines will be acted out by myself and Homayon. Therefore myself and Homayon are figures of the artist's imagination.

Storyboard Animation

For the planning process of our music video, I have produced a storyboard of all the scenes in our video. My group member Homayon has produced an animated version of the storyboard which consists of a video with our music track playing in the background. Each scene is shown on the video with a caption of what will occur during that particular scene.

The video can be viewed below:

Music Video Treatment

As part of the planning process for our music video, I have produced a Treatment for the music video. In this Treatment, things such as Props, Lighting, Characters, Location and the Synopsis/Plot of the music video will be included.

Props

Costume
Bench (Location)
Lake (Location)

Location

The Location we have decided to choose for our music video is either Osterley Park or Hounslow Heath. We have decided to pick this as our location as we feel that a park would be perfect for our filming, along with the scenery which can represent the randomness of the lyrics. We thought that the park would be the best location for our filming as on our storyboard, I've included the use of a lake, benches, trees and grass.

Lighting

Due to the location picked for filming, we've decided that all lighting is going to natural lighting. Therefore, we are looking to record this music video on a sunny but cold day, the reason being is that we felt the cold can be represented by the character's costume and the sun can represent the character's mood along with the blue skies.

Character(s)

We have decided to use three characters throughout the filming of our music video, the main character will be filmed throughout most of the music video and will be portrayed as the artist. The main character is yet to be decided and will be uploaded in the 'Cast' section of my blog. The other two characters include myself and my group member Homayon. In certain intervals of the music video, there will be cameos of me and Homayon, the point of this is to create a mix of the random lyrics with random visuals in the song - therefore within the music video, we will be part of the artist's imagination.

Synopsis/Plot

This music video will be based on the artist's feelings for someone very close to him. The scenery used will represent certain parts of the lyrics but will mainly represent the artist's feelings, as a result we've picked to film our music video in a park therefore representing peace. The artist throughout the music video raps about his feeling for someone he likes/loves, he describes her affect on him and others around him.

Moodboard on Digipaks

Part of the preparation for our music video planning is to produce a Digipak to promote our artist and the music video. I have produced a moodboard consisting of other artists' Digipaks/Album covers within the same genre in order to get an idea of how our Digipak will be.

Artist Image/Biography

As there is two of us in my group, it was easier to discuss the Biography/Image of the artist. Ideas were brought up based on our research into the music genre which is Rap and conventions of music videos in this genre.

I have produced a moodboard which contains images of artists that are in the same genre as ours. By producing the moodboard, it has given us an idea of what image our artist will portray.

Moodboard of Artists
From observing many of the artists in the same genre, we have come to the conclusion that our artist will be portrayed to be around 20-25. The costume will be similar to other artists of this genre, for example the character may be wearing something along the lines of Jeans, T Shirt and a Baseball Jacket. I used those items of clothing as an example as it is the typical dress code for rappers. The moodboard contains possible looks that our artist may use.

Preview of Chosen Track

As the name and artist of the track remains unknown, we have benefitted from this as it gives us a range of ideas to work from. Below, I have uploaded a preview of our chosen track which can be listened to.

Focus Group Feedback on Chosen Track

As part of my research into producing my own music video for our chosen track, we decided to interview a Focus Group for ideas and feedback. The feedback we've received from the focus group will be helpful in generating ideas for our music video in terms of Location, Mise En Scene, Intertextuality and Narrative.
I have uploaded the video of our interview with our focus group which can be viewed below:

We asked our respondents a series of questions, based upon those questions, the responses will be listed below. We asked a total of 5 questions.

1) How does the music make you feel?

The response we received from our respondents is that two of them found that the music made them feel happy and 'uplifted' their moods. After asking them to elaborate and explain why they felt this, their response was that the lyrics were humorous and quite random. The third respondent explained that there is a meaning behind the lyrics, although he wasn't a fan of this genre, he did enjoy listening to our chosen track.

2) What do you imagine when listening to this track?

One of our respondents explained that the music helped him to 'escape' from the everyday routine he went through, his reason for this was that the randomness of the lyrics helped him feel free alongside the fast tempo beat used. Another respondent explained that the music helped him imagine someone walking down the streets of Central London, this idea was similar to another music video of an artist called 'The Streets'.

3) What Genre do you think the movie is?

Our respondents all came up with the same answers which were 'Indie'. This was the correct answer as our chosen music track is an Indie track.

4) What do you think the artist would wear?

Our first respondent said that he thought the artist would be wearing something along the lines of skinny jeans, vans and a t shirt, however the rest of our respondents disagreed stating that they thought the artist would be wearing casual baggy clothes due to the mood the music creates which is a laid-back and relaxed mood.

Pitch for Selection of Song

In today's lesson, our teacher went through each track that we have been given to choose for our final coursework piece. There was a total of 21 tracks written to a CD that were played out to us, we decided to choose track number 20 as we liked the beat of the tune and the flow of the lyrics. We were given a total of 5 minutes to compose our pitch as to why we wanted to select the track that we chose, below I have written out a verbal version of our speech.

Pitching For a Song

We chose to pitch for track 20, as we felt that we can perform best to this track and the flow of the lyrics was within our abilities to lipsynch to. After hearing this track, instantly ideas were flowing through my head for possible ideas for our version of the music video for it. As a result of this, I felt that this was the right song for us to make our music video for.

The artist of this song is 'Lupe Fiasco', we figured this out as at the start of the track the artist introduced himself. I am also a fan of Lupe Fiasco, from being a fan I managed identify his voice and from there I identified the artist.

Representation for the artist will be carried out in many ways through clothing, for example Hip Hop artists tend to wear a lot of jewelry and wear baggy jeans and colourful clothing. From previous analysis of Hip Hop music videos, we will be using similar conventions in order to represent the genre of the music track we've picked.

Narrative:

The lyrics of the music track that we have picked narrates the interest of skateboarding, in particular the lyric 'Kick, Push, Kick, Push' throughout the chorus narrates the movement of skateboarding. Therefore, we are considering to include aspects of skateboarding throughout the filming of our music video.

Mise En Scene:

After having a discussion on the idea of a location for the filming of our music video, it was decided that we would film our music video in a Skateboard Park. This was decided as this location would contribute to the narrative of our music video along with the music.

Lyrics Analysis

Below I have pasted a copy of the lyrics along with my analysis of the lyrics.

Alot of people around here lost the white in their eyes - Suggests the person makes people feel like they're on drugs
See the lust inside your heart, so why do you go and touch the sky? - Implies someone feeling high

Think with their head argue with their gut - Not thinking straight let alone doing thing straight
Draft did you leave the door open it might encourage customers in
I wish the barmaid shut
Look like shit, down on my luck
Two world wars and one world cup
Scream by the desperate divided crutch
Used to have an Empire then we grew up
Lost everything who gives a fuck
Money in the jukebox rocks all night
Same shit bands too much hype
Everyone knows, everyone sees fights
Everyone drinks in the corner, right
Everyone knows hes a C blood type
Same rematch to much delight
I love her she loves me to that's why we get together - Song is about how the artist's partner makes him feel

Alot of people around here lost the white in their eyes
See the lust inside your heart, I don't want to touch the sky

He's dizzy for Lizzy
I'm dizzy generally
Scapegoat hit by a girl befriended me
Not that I care it's the only use to me
She bouncing off walls through doors
Pretend to be everything I wanna be and everything less

Your leaving alone but you came together - Whole verse suggests that someone has a lot of power
Who made the sun turn to stormy weather
Leaving alone but you came together
Who made the suns turn to stormy weather
Alot of people around here lost the white in their eyes
See the lust inside your heart, I don't want to touch the sky

She said tonight Jay I'm gunna teach them a ballad
An English man in every coward
I was kinda impressed by the way she dressed
I scoured this land to find a girl empowered
Ask her again why her heart turned sour
One of the ones that the boys devoured
If your gonna learn a song you gotta sing along
There's an English man in every coward
I got money in the jukebox rocks all night
Same shit bands too much hype
Everyone knows, everyone sees fights
Everyone drinks in the corner, right
Everyone knows he's a C blood type
Same rematch to much delight
Well I love her, she lovin' me too that's why we get together

[Repeat x2]

Alot of people around here lost the whites in their eyes

See the lust inside your heart I don't want to touch the sky

Analysis:

From analysing the lyrics, I feel that the lyrics are quite random. However, from the randomness you get an insight into how the artist is feeling at the time. The randomness of the lyrics also helps create a relaxed mood, with the use of slight humour. After analysing these lyrics, I feel that this song is about how the artist feels about his partner or somebody he is in love with and the use of the random lyrics helps describe the rush of feelings he is feeling at the time.

Case Study on Madonna - Material Girl

As Part of my Research into codes and convention used/portrayed in music videos, I have conducted a case study of Madonna's 'Material Girl'. I have embedded a video of 'Material Girl' below which can be viewed.

Case Study
Madonna states the time that this music video was recorded was how she was feeling at the time. The narrative of 'Material Girl' is simple as the song is about a lady who is inspired by materialistic things such as cars, money and jewelry. This is shown in the as the men who 'lust' for her in the video are constantly giving her jewelry, flashing money and driving her around in expensive and prestigious cars. Madonna has copied some of the uses of 'Mise En Scene' as Marilyn Monroe who used the same setting and clothing in 'Diamonds are a girl's bestfriend'. Possible reasons for using similar characteristics of Marilyn Monroe's video are that Marinlyn Monroe was a well known Hollywood star and she took pride in her material possessions.

The music video of Material Girl is both Narrative and Performance based.
  • It is Performance based as the costumes, setting, and in general Mise En Scene stands out. Also the characters throughout the music video are very dramatic and this can be seen from their actions and dancing throughout.
  • It is Narrative based as the lyrics of the song dictate her love for materialistic possessions and this is shown in the performance side of the video.
Star Image is represented through the costumes worn, as speculated a 'Material Girl' is likely to be proud of her possessions and the costumes worn throughout the video by the characters as well as Madonna are likely to be designer clothes. Madonna is seen wearing expensive and sparkling jewlry which contributes to her 'Star Image' as it makes her the centre of attention as her costume is unique and very difficult not to notice. Another thing that adds to this is the fact that the extra characters are wearing black suits whilst Madonna is wearing a bright red costume which stands out, yet again making her centre of attention. The heavy use of jewelry defines the title 'Material Girl' as the jewelry is materialistic hence the title. However, the costumes are not the only thing that contributes to Madonna's Star Image. The use of the Ferrari Mondial QV makes her look prestigious as the car itself is a rare, expensive and prestigious car to have and in one of the scenes in the video she is seen being driven around in this car. The fact that she is being driven around yet again portrays her to be a star as its as if she has her own 'chaffeur'.

Madonna has used the technique/convention of 'Intertextuality' by using the same setting, costume and storyline of Marilyn Monroe's 'Diamonds are a girl's bestfriend' (as mentioned earlier). Intertextuality is the reference of a text to another text. Some may say that 'Material Girl' is a tribute to the late Marinlyn Monroe as the storyline references Marilyn Monroe is many ways such as her being a materialistic Hollywood Star. Examples of Interetextuality include the background (red) throughout the first scene and the costume which Madonna is wearing.

Marilyn Monroe's 'Diamonds are a girl's bestfriend'

Madonna's 'Material Girl'

There is use of 'Voyeurism' in Madonna's Material Girl at the start of the video where the two characters are talking in the cinema and Madonna is onscreen performing. Another scene that includes voyeurism is the scene where Madonna is seen in the changing room talking on the phone. The addition of this convention makes the audience feel as if they are seeing everything in first person, this gives the audience the feeling that they are involved in the music video and they are seeing everything themselves. However it also makes the audience feel as if they are seeing/hearing things they shouldn't, as the phonecall should be private and in this sense the audience feel as if they are intruding and invading her privacy.

To conclude, Material Girl is a great video in the sense that it uses many of the conventions listed above in a way that makes the audience notice Madonna as a 'Material Girl'. As mentioned earlier, this video was recorded based on how she was feeling at the time, the composition of this video is brilliant in the aspect that it expresses her feelings and her state of mind and at the same time tributes another star, the late Marinlyn Monroe.

Star Image Analysis of Madonna - Material Girl

In today's lesson, we watched the music video of Madonna's 'Material Girl' and analysed different conventions used in the music video. The analysis I conducted was on 'Star Image', the anaylsis can be seen/read below on the Powerpoint Presentation.

Close Textual Analysis of NWA - Straight Outta Compton

As part of my media coursework, my teacher set me a task in which I had to pick a video from 'NME's Top 100 Music Vidoes' and talk about the codes and conventions used in the music video. I decided to choose NWA's 'Straight Outta Compton', this video was number 31 on NME's Top 100 videos. Using Adobe Premiere Elements 10, I added a 'Voice Over' which in other words means I narrated the codes and conventions used in this music video Please note the sound quality is poor due to the mic used to record.

What is Genre?

Today in Media, we looked at 'Genre'. Genre refers to a category, and in music terms Genre can be identified through the characteristics of the song and/or music video.

Are the texts defined by Genres?

Yes, I feel that all texts are defined by Genres as each of the texts are differentiated from each other. For example, three types of genre that are differentiated are Thriller, Comedy and Action. However, although these genres may be differentiated, a text may include elements of some or all of the different genres.

Also, texts such as music are defined by Genre. Examples of music genres include Rap, Hip-Hop, Garage, House and R'n'B. Every music text is differentiated by genre and this can be defined through the instruments used in the instrumental, the flow of the artist's lyrics and the context of the lyrics. For example, Rap lyrics tend to tell a story, therefore the lyrics will be in chronological order and the artist will have either a fast or slow flow. An example of this can be viewed below:

Do texts use Genres?

Yes, texts such as Music and Films. In order for these Genres to be differentiated, these texts use genres so that different audiences can watch/listen to different texts. The use of Genre in texts helps to provide a meaning to the text which can attract different types of audiences. Examples of different genres used in texts can be viewed below:

This text uses Genre to differentiate itself from other texts. From analysing the characteristics of this text, this text can be identified as Rap. The flow of the lyrics is common in Rap, this video is both Performance and Narrative based.

What is the Purpose of Genre?

The purpose of Genre is to differentiate different texts and to also provide a meaning to a text. The use of different Genres helps to attract different target audiences. Genres are described to be 'dynamic' in the sense that the boundaries are constantly changing due to the different types of genre.

Defining what Genre my Opening Sequence is

Last year during my AS year, one of the pieces of coursework we had to complete was to produce our own Opening Sequence. Through the use of certain characteristics, we defined our opening sequence as 'Thriller'. The conventions we used were common Thriller conventions such as the filming effect 'Film Noir' which creates a tense atmosphere through the visuals of the filming. Other conventions that helped us to define what genre our opening sequence is were the location used throughout the filming, we decided to choose a deserted location as this is also a common thriller convention as the use of this helps to create a sense of mystery.

Analysis of 'Will Smith - Summertime'

As part of my research on music videos, I have picked the video of 'Summertime' by artists Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff. This song is of the rap genre, I have written down my anaylsis of this video which talks about the codes and conventions used and their representation of the genre.

At the start of the video, the use of the 'Disk Scratch' (usually conducted by a DJ) effect gives away the genre as this effect is predominantly used in 'Rap' music. The smooth flow of the artist's lyrics is also a giveaway as the narrative of the lyrics is similar to that of all Rap lyrics. The lyrics narrate the day to day activites the community take part in during the season of Summer in Philadelphia, the use of this technique is known to be very common in Rap music as Rap artists 'rap' a certain story through their lyrics. The use of the location/setting in this video is also a characteristic of the genre as the artists are representing where they come from, this is also very common in rap videos.

Throughout this song, the relationship between the lyrics and visuals can be seen as the lyrics of the video are narrating a happy and joyfull time for the artists and the visuals are linked to this as the lighting is natural. The use of the natural lighting helps to represent the characters' moods as the Summer day represents the joyfull and happy mood that the characters are feeling at the time. At certain intervals in the video (the beginning and end to be specific), there is a split screen effect which splits the artists' bodies in half which in a way is quite funny as one half of their body moves quicker than the other. This in turn brings comedy into the video, again representing humour and joy.

The two camera shots used throughout the video are 'Close Ups' and 'Medium Shots'. Close ups of the artists are a common camera shot used throughout the video, there are several Close Up shots of the two artists as they travel through Philadelphia and whilst they are rapping. This is a common technique used in rap videos, the artists are shown to be the main part of the music video. However, there are medium shots of the extra characters used in the music video whilst they are dancing/performing.

Throughout this video, there are no intertextual references.

Overall, this video is both Performance and Narrative based. This however is not a common technique in rap videos, as rap videos tend to mostly be Narrative based. Therefore it is debateable as to whether this song is part Hip Hop as Hip Hop videos are based on Performance as well as Narrative.

Codes and Conventions of Music Videos

As part of my coursework, I have looked at a series of music videos which consist of different genres to anaylse the codes and conventions used in them.

From my research, different genres of music have different codes and conventions for their music videos. The first genre I looked at was 'Rap' music, I looked at Rap artist's such as Tupac, Notorious B.I.G, G-Unit, 50 Cent, Ja Rule, Nas, Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg. From analysing their music videos, I have learnt that in each of these artists' videos, the artist will use the 'hood' (town/place where artist is from) as the setting in each of their videos.

Below, I have uploaded a video of myself and a friend talking about the codes and conventions of music videos in more detail.

Preliminary Music Video

As part of our research into the technique 'Lipsynching', we chose a music track to perform to.
We chose to do this music track we felt it was better to start off with an easy track to Lipsynch to, therefore we chose 'Break Even' by 'The Script'.
I have posted a link to the video of the music track below..

Introduction

As part of my A2 Media Studies Coursework, we have been assigned the task to record a music video. Within this video, we mu st use techniques such as 'Lipsynching' to make it look as if we are singing/ rapping along with the artist of the our desired music track. On this blog, I will be uploading regular posts that cover what we do in our lessons, research and any other relevant materials that will help my group throughout this cou rse.
